Writing and studying in English at university level can be difficult, especially if this is not your first language. We are here to help you meet these challenges with confidence.

The English Language Unit (ELU) can help you reach your full potential. We provide English language and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) support for all international students whose first language is not English. We run courses, offer individual support and provide access to self-study resources. All our services are free and you're welcome to use them at any point while you study your degree at the University.

Current students can access resources, and see upcoming courses on the intranet (you'll need to sign in to access this content).

What support is available?

Courses

We have a number of courses and seminars coming up to help you improve your English language and academic skills. These six week courses will help you to make the most of your time at Bath Spa University. Examples of the types of courses we run include:

  • Writing skills seminars
  • Seminar and presentation skills seminars
  • Social and cultural English seminars

Language surgeries

These are held in three different locations: Newton Park, Corsham Court and Sion Hill. There is no need to book in advance – you can simply turn up to one of the sessions with your specific questions.

Individual tutorials

You can book personal one-to-one support with your assignments. Each tutorial lasts 50 minutes.

Self-study resources

You'll find the ELU self-study resources in the library on Newton Park campus. We also offer a number of online resources that can help you to improve your level of English language and boost your academic skills.

There are also a number of resources available on the web to help you get a better grasp of the English language, academic writing styles and research techniques. These include free courses, study tools and guides.
