Why I chose Bath Spa

Third year Biology student Peter Rowland explains why he chose to study at BSU.

Choosing the right university is a critical decision in one’s educational journey, a decision that sets the course for future career paths and personal development.

For me, this decision was deeply influenced by my desire for a learning environment that not only challenges conventional pedagogical methods but also aligns with my academic interests and learning preferences.

After thorough research and contemplation, I found my answer in Bath Spa University. It was the University's innovative approach to education, especially in the sciences, that resonated with me.

Assessment methods

Unlike many traditional institutions that predominantly focus on written exams, BSU embraces a broader spectrum of assessment methods.

This was particularly evident in the BSc (Hons) Biology degree program, which is primarily coursework-based. A small number of exams are still incorporated within the course, all of which are open book exams and are far more casual and relaxed.

I felt that the conventional examination system, while effective for some, often does not cater to the diverse learning styles of all students. Recognising this, Bath Spa University has implemented a more inclusive assessment strategy that values different forms of academic demonstration.

For students like myself, who thrive in practical settings rather than theoretical exams, this approach is not just welcome but necessary.

The coursework-based evaluation in the Biology degree allows for a deeper, more hands-on exploration of the subject matter. This method facilitates a better understanding of complex concepts through direct engagement and application, a crucial aspect for any aspiring biologist.

Scenic campuses

Positioned in a region known for its stunning landscapes and rich history, the Newton Park campus is a haven of serenity that encourages and supports an environment conducive to both academic and personal growth.

The lush greenery, serene waters, and diverse wildlife create a picturesque backdrop for study and contemplation.

This blend of nature and academic pursuit provides an ideal setting for immersive learning experiences outside the traditional classroom environment.

Field studies, research projects and practical experiments are greatly enriched by the immediate access to such a diverse ecosystem, allowing students to observe and interact with the very subjects of their study in real-time.

Student experience

The University's commitment to a holistic education extends beyond its academic offerings. Bath Spa's vibrant campus life, supportive community and abundance of extracurricular activities contribute to a well-rounded university experience.

Prospering opportunities for personal development, leadership and creativity prepare students not only for their future careers but also for their roles as citizens in society.

In choosing Bath Spa University, I was drawn not only to its unique educational philosophy but also to the values it embraces. The emphasis on sustainability, creativity, and inclusivity resonates with my personal beliefs and academic goals.

As I come closer to the end of this exciting chapter of my life, I am confident that Bath Spa University has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to succeed in my future endeavours.
