We’re fortunate to have an award-wining ensemble of professors, readers and leaders within our school of Writing, Publishing and Humanities at BSU, each committed to teaching excellence, with a shared interest and investment in the written word.

Recent Booker Prize winner Samantha Harvey, is just one BSU alumna who has gone on to gain great accolade, and stayed with us to impart her experience of writing to aid and encourage future writers at BSU.

We know everyone has a story within them, and you too can write your own narrative and pursue your passion for English, writing or publishing with our array of creative course combinations.

BA (Hons) Creative Writing

Joining our vibrant writing community, you’ll be supported by leading practitioners across of various genres and encouraged to explore experiment with your imagination and creativity, with emphasis on developing your professional practice for employability.

You may take inspiration from your immediate surroundings in the World-Heritage City of Bath, while you nurture your craft through workshops where you’re likely to find friends for life. Whether your driven by poetry, fiction, scriptwriting or memoir, we’ll help you find your voice. From podcast to publication, work on your projects, your way, with our support - you’ll also benefit from guest lectures and connection, local festivals and a thriving literary scene.

BA (Hons) English Literature

Literature is diverse and every text we pick up provides a different perspective on the world. English Literature at Bath Spa University will enable you to acquire specialised subject knowledge, alongside skill development that you can apply to contemporary challenges, issues or debates. Graduates have followed paths into publishing, PR, teaching and journalism with leading employers e.g. New Scientist, Oxford University Press amongst many others.

Taught by experts you’ll explore a wide range of periods, literary genres and approaches, placing your reading in wider contexts, with the ability to to draw on other disciplines that deepen your understanding and sharpen your insights. Our staff are committed to excellence in teaching, providing you with the best possible experience. You’ll be encouraged to think differently about ‘literature’ and explore original ways to analyse both classic and contemporary texts.
