Apply for up to £3,500 to support you while undertaking an international placement.

Launched in 2017, the Bath Spa Global Horizons Award was established to assist students wishing to embark on international placements, research or study trips that are related to their undergraduate degree course.

If your application is successful, you will need to do the following once you have returned from your trip:

  • Submit all receipts
  • Submit a 1,500 word reflective piece

We recommend that you also sign up to the Bath Spa Award. This Careers and Employability-led scheme will help you communicate what you've experienced and use this to your advantage when applying for jobs.

“The experience of applying for the award to support this residency gave me practical insight into applying for grants. Grants and awards can provide a significant source of financial support for professional artists and so understanding how to prepare a successful grant application is a highly useful skill moving forwards as a graduate.”

Olivia Rees, BA (Hons) Creative Arts Practice, residency in Tuscany, Italy

Criteria

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate course as a full or part-time student at Bath Spa
  • Making use of the funding prior to 31 May in your final year of undergraduate studies
  • A home student whose country of domicile is within the UK
  • Using the funds to support a study, research, or work placement abroad of at least 10 days or more, which will have a direct impact on studies, research and/or career

Your household income figure will then be automatically sent to the University and used to assess your eligibility for the award.

“Without the funding from the award, I would never have been able to undertake this trip. I simply did not have the funds to finance such a journey myself. As such, the money I received was invaluable in enabling me to travel to China, and was greatly appreciated.”

Isaac Glynn, BA (Hons) Creative Writing with Philosophy and Ethics, summer school in Beijing, China

Within four weeks after each deadline has passed, the panel will meet to discuss the applications received. Applicants should expect to hear an outcome within six weeks.

Alternative options

If your application is unsuccessful, you'll be notified and given time to amend your application for consideration for the International Travel Fund instead.

Please note that the maximum funding for the International Travel Fund is £500, and you'll need to adjust your application to demonstrate how you'll find the additional funds to support your travel.

About the award

The Bath Spa Global Horizons Award is a targeted award, funded through the University’s Access and Participation Plan with the Office for Fair Access, and is designed to help students with the costs of undertaking an international placement, research, or study trip abroad.

Through its measures set out in the Access and Participation Plan, the University is especially keen to encourage students to apply for this award who are from groups who are underrepresented in higher education and who might not have otherwise considered a period abroad because of the cost.
