What happens if I haven't passed?

If you haven't passed a module, there are a number of options available, including reassessment or appeal. Find out more about your different options on this page.

Reassessment

If your module has “Reassessments” next to it in your official results email, this means that you still have a reassessment opportunity in that module. We recommend that you click on the “ResultsHub” link in your official results email, which will take you to information about your individual reassessment items. 

Your official results email will include the reassessment submission deadline. Details of the reassessment brief and how to submit your reassessment should be available on your module’s Ultra page.

If you have any questions on the reassessment brief or how to submit your reassessment, contact your module tutor as soon as possible for confirmation about these points. 

Your reassessment will either be referred (capped at the pass mark) or deferred (uncapped).

This will be shown by the letter “R” for referred or “L” for deferred for each of your modules in your official results email.

If there's a number in the “Mark” column and a “R” or a “L” in the Grade column on your official results email, this means that you have passed one or more of your assessment items within your module, but you still have at least one assessment item within that module still to complete. 

You'll need to successfully pass all assessment items within a module to successfully pass the module.

Failed modules

If your module has “Failed” next to it in your official results email, there are no further reassessment opportunities in this module.

Your results email will explain if you're allowed to redeem the credit from this failed module or not.

If you're allowed to redeem the credit, then you'll need to retake a module during the following academic year.

If the module is a core module on your course, then you'll need to retake this module. If the module is an optional module or the failed module is not running in the next academic year, then you'll be able to choose an equivalent module. 

You'll need to attend all lectures and seminars in the new module and submit new assessment items, in order to redeem the credit for the failed module. 

Can I appeal?

If you've received your official results email and feel you have valid grounds to appeal, it is possible to do so - but it must follow due process. Find out more below.

Appeals

If you've received your official results email and you feel that you have valid grounds to submit a Stage One: Formal Appeal, please submit your claim form to appeals@bathspa.ac.uk within 15 working days of the date of your official results email (which contains the results against which you wish to appeal).

Please note: You cannot submit a valid Stage One: Formal Appeal claim when you have only received provisional marks and feedback from your tutor.

Marks are provisional-only until they are taken to a Central Assessment Board and your official results email is sent to you on the Results Publication Date following that Board.

You then have 15 working days from the date of your official results email to submit a Stage One: Formal Appeal. 

Retrospective exceptional circumstances 

Have you received your official results email and you haven't submitted for an assessment item which you feel you've an Exceptional Circumstances claim for? If so, you have 10 working days from the date of your official results email to submit a Retrospective Exceptional Circumstances claim.

Fit to sit/submit principle

As part of your studies, it’s important for you to know that the University operates a Fit to Sit/Submit principle as part of our Exceptional Circumstances policy.

This is based on the principle that when you submit an assessment or sit an examination, you’re declaring that you’re fit to do so.

You should not then claim at a later date that your performance in an assessment or examination was affected by exceptional circumstances.

Academic Integrity 

If you've received your official results email and there is a Grade Code of “UP” against a module, this means that an Academic Misconduct penalty has been applied to that module.

You should already have received confirmation of this penalty following an Academic Misconduct Panel in a separate email.
