The Identities and Equalities Research Cluster

Exploring intersections of identities such as gender, race, and sexuality, addressing inequalities through interdisciplinary research to drive social change.

About us

We are a community of researchers working across a range of disciplines in the School of Sciences, and we welcome researchers from other Schools whose research aligns with this group. We also work with a range of external research collaborators, both within the UK and internationally.

Our members have expertise in gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, migrant, religious, national, class-based and other identities and their intersections. We examine implications for social, economic, political, health, education, environmental, organizational and other inequalities.

We use a variety of methodologies spanning quantitative and qualitative approaches, including large-scale surveys and experiments, to archival work and ethnographic methods.

We investigate themes such as:

  • Equality, diversity, and inclusion/exclusion
  • Social policy and social change
  • Cultural representations / stereotypes
  • Social and political mobilization
  • Radicalisation and resistance to extremism
  • Media / dominant cultural narratives and counter-narratives
  • Decolonising public spaces and histories
