Lily

To celebrate the opening of Commons on 5 June 2014 and in conjunction with his exhibition Collected Works at the Holburne Museum (21 May to 14 September), Julian Opie agreed to an installation of his animated artwork 'Lily' from 2013. 

'Lily' was first shown as part of Opie's exhibition with Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston from 26 October to 7 December 2013.  

About the artist

Educated at Goldsmith's University of London, where he was taught by conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin, Julian Opie is a major visual artist who works within the sphere of the New British Sculpture Movement, which looks to combine urban decay and waste with elements of kitsch, wit and playful colour in order to challenge our preconcieved notions of the meaning of objects. 

Since emerging as an artist in the 1980s, he has produced a number of works which playfully respond to pop culture, including designing the cover of Blur's 2000 album The Best Of..., producing set designs for the Royal Opera House in London, as well as creating a monument to rock singer Bryan Adams. 

His works can be found in such public art collections as Tate, British Museum, V&A, National Portrait Gallery (London) and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA).
