Disability Activism and Advocacy
A research project on disability activism and advocacy in the South West of England conducted by We Are The People and funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Who are we?
We Are The People are a small research team of disabled academics and non-disabled allies engaged in disability research and disability activism.
To find out more about this research project, visit the We Are The People webpage.
What did we want to do?
Through our research, we wanted to:
- Learn about disabled people’s experiences of activism and advocacy
- Find out what barriers disabled people face when taking part in activism and advocacy, along with how this can be improved
- Share this information with activist organisations and the community.
How did we research this?
- An online survey
- Creative 'zine' (magazine) workshops

- A video recording with audio description of the zine, page by page
- Project Report – This report is designed to give an overview of the research project. The motivations for the research. The methods used within the study. Outcomes from the study, including the data creation, the sharing of findings and future hopes as a result of this study. The project report is currently available in the following format:
We know that the formats we have made available will not be accessible for everyone. Please get in touch if you can recommend other formats that we could use for sharing the outcomes of this project.
What will we do with our findings?
- The zine is available online, and we have a limited number of print copies which we have been sending out
- Create academic reports
- Create a top tip list for activist groups
- Use it in events and seminars at Bath Spa University.
