Personal statement

Katy is a Research Assistant on the We Are The People project. She is a linguistics researcher and Easy Read translator, with a background in participatory research. She is particularly interested in Easy Read as a translation process, and how clear communication strategies can be used to make news and democratic processes more inclusive for people with learning disabilities.

Katy's previous research looked at communicative issues in return migration for asylum seekers, focusing on barriers to people giving informed consent in this multilingual environment. As a result of her research, she co-produced training for advice staff working with refugees to understand what communication barriers might exist in their work, and what strategies they could use to overcome them.
