Personal statement

Jonathan is the course leader for Bath Spa’s MA in Nature and Travel Writing (low residency MA).

He has been a travel writer since 1998, including seven years as a travel magazine editor and now writing freelance for major UK newspapers and travel magazines. He has taught the craft of travel writing since 2004, and led writing courses on location in Europe, Africa and Asia. In 2019 he wrote The Travel Writer’s Way (Bradt), which is the standard text for aspiring travel writers.

His articles have appeared in National Geographic Traveller, Conde Nast Traveller, Sunday Times Travel, Wanderlust, Country Life, BBC Wildlife, The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, Wexas Traveller and others.

Jonathan has judged many travel writing awards, including the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, the Dolman Prize, the Edward Stanford/Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year award, and the annual competitions of The Independent, the British Guild of Travel Writers and the New Zealand travel writers’ association. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers.
