Personal statement

J has worked as a freelance Creative Technologist in and around Bath. Their work is eclectic, and has included being a Creative Consultant at Modern Art Oxford, contributing to the archival and preservation of interactive media, helping an artist to recreate their immersive artwork in Virtual Reality, and even running public workshops on creativity.

They now work as a Teaching Fellow in Creative Computing, teaching across a range of computing courses. They predominately teach computer programming and web development, and they also support students in the development and iteration of their creative projects.

As a teacher and a practitioner, J is interested not only in the technical nuts and bolts of creating software, but also how to make software that is good – whether that means efficient, user friendly, emotive, fun, or anything else. Rooted in the philosophy that for as long as software is everywhere, it’s important we get it right – J is continually exploring and teaching how digital work can be made better for those who use it.

In addition to their teaching, J also contributes to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives within the university. This includes chairing Bath Spa’s network of Mental Health First Aiders. J has volunteered at Bath Mind, where they were Mental Health First Aid trained, and supported young individuals and community groups navigate mental health challenges.
