Personal statement

Esther leads and teaches on the Art and Design PGCE. She was a video editor and secondary school art technician before teaching Art, Photography and Graphic Design in Secondary schools in Bristol.

She is experienced at developing Art and Design curriculums at KS3,4 and 5 and passionate about developing pedagogies that build on subject specific research. She also has experience delivering creative subject lessons for EYFS and Primary and considers cross-phase awareness a key part of a quality Art and Design curriculum

Esther has an MA in Fine Art at Bath Spa that informs her practice-as-research methodology. She is enthusiastic about supporting new art teachers to develop the competencies and critical engagement required to be exceptional art and design teachers of the future. This includes promoting a pedagogy of care within an inclusive and socially-aware curriculum, supporting creativity explicitly in planning and promoting a critical understanding of Art, Craft and Design as having specific but also overlapping pedagogies. The troublesome space between artist/maker and creative art teacher is always a key factor in her lecturing, and she enjoys the challenge of supporting creative and pedagogical development within such a boundless subject area.
