Personal statement

Emily was born and raised in Suffolk and moved to Bath in 2017 to complete a degree in Music at Bath Spa University.

Throughout her time as a student, she volunteered for many different roles gaining large amounts of experience in academic representation, the HE sector and governance. She became the sole undergraduate student governor in 2018, in her second year of university, and carried on in this position until she graduated. Through these roles she discovered a strong interest in education, HE policy and equality.

In 2020 Emily was successfully elected as the Students’ Union President of Bath Spa University, enabling her to carry on a position on the Board of Governors. As President she was also the chair of Bath Spa University Students’ Union’s Board of Trustees. Through her role as President, she gained lots of experience representing students, working with key University stakeholders, and leading on sustainability projects within the Students’ Union. In this position she was able to ensure the University pledged to never invest in fossil fuels, implement comprehensive no detriment policies for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students as well as work with the University to provide rent rebates and hardship funding in the most accessible way for students.

After leaving the position of President, Emily has now re-joined the board as an independent governor.
