Personal statement
Dylan was appointed Head of Initial Teacher Education at Bath Spa University in 2022.
He began his career at Bath Spa University as KS2/3 Course Leader for music, subsequently becoming Course Leader for PGCE Secondary Music.
Dylan was promoted to Secondary Programme Leader, which was awarded an outstanding Ofsted inspection grade in both 2011 and in 2016 inspections, and became Bath Spa’s ITE Ofsted Lead in 2020.
Prior to working at Bath Spa, Dylan gained wide experience in education both as a senior leader and teacher. He is a passionate musician who believes in the power music has to enrich the lives of all children and young people.
He was tasked to establish the Music Hub for Somerset in 2011, and whilst Secondary Course Leader for Music he established the annual Bath Spa Music Education Conference. Dylan has been a Senior Examiner, developing the specifications for A-level Music Technology as an examination subject and has extensive experience of examining A-level and GCSE Music. He was the network lead for the Bath Spa Chartered College network.
Dylan believes that education plays a key role in promoting social justice and reducing social inequalities. He sees teachers as being pivotal to making a difference to the lives and futures of children and young people. He has been privileged to work for nearly 20 years with beginning teachers who are passionate, dedicated and committed to their profession.
He has been a school governor for over 20 years, an assessor for the Advanced Skills Teacher/Excellent Teacher awards, and has been an experienced Ofsted and Estyn school inspector. His research interests are in music education, teaching and learning and encouraging teachers to research their own practice. Dylan has been a magistrate for 20 years and is a Freeman of the City of London and a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
