Duncan Silvey – Bath Spa University

Personal statement

Duncan has been part of the music, film and games communities for over two decades, experiencing them as both a creative and industry professional.

Since his mid teens, he has been collaborating as a musician, performer, songwriter, producer and engineer, becoming a member of various DIY touring bands, up until his early thirties. He now continues to write, record and release as an independent artist.

Alongside his creative outputs, Duncan also has a strong interest in the music industry and in his mid twenties became a freelancer in various agencies, including music industry publication, Music Ally, creative agencies WMA Global, LUX Artists and Into Games, as well as international artist management company, Red Light.

In 2017, he founded his own consultancy service providing creative development for clients from education establishments Youth Music and Goldsmiths University, as well as private clients across the UK and Europe.

Outside of the university, Duncan co-directs a Community Interest Company called 'HumanKiND Festival' which organises community strengthening events in south Bristol. This includes a Saturday morning Dads playgroup - BS3 Daddin' and BS3 Jammin' - an autumn harvest festival involving Michelin star chefs who cook donated local produce. The proceeds are then donated to the local food bank.

This breadth of experience and an open minded approach constantly fuels his curiosity on how sectors and cultures intertwine, making businesses sustainable, encourage collaboration and forge communities for the benefit of society.
