Lior Burstein completed our Skills Bootcamp in Digital Marketing in September this year. Two months ago, she successfully started a new career within our Skills Bootcamp team.

Earlier this year, Lior Burstein decided she wanted to get back into employment after taking a break. She decided to take part in our Skills Bootcamp in Digital Marketing and has been successful securing a job applying the skills she learnt.

She now works for the University as a Digital Bootcamp Programme Administrator, supporting student recruitment and enrollment. She also supports the lecturers and students on the Skills Bootcamps during and after the courses to ensure their expectations are being met and they're aware of any employability support they can access to help their employment journeys.

“I think the biggest success of the Skills Bootcamps has been improving the students' confidence in getting back into work or taking the leap to change careers.”

Completing the Skills Bootcamp

I was taking a break from work and during this time I decided to explore a new sector to see if it's something I'd want to pursue a career in. When I found out about the Skills Bootcamps at Bath Spa University, I thought it was the perfect way to learn about business development and add to my CV.

I greatly enjoyed learning about the principles of digital marketing and using the theory we learned in practical ways to market products. We created a marketing campaign for a real business with feedback from tutors who had industry experience. This was useful to give us real world examples of how to apply the principles we were learning about. I also benefited from collaborating with my fellow students and learning from them, as well as from our skilled tutors.

I was especially looking forward to the employability skills that were advertised on the short course. During the 12 weeks I improved my CV writing, learned new techniques to succeed in interviews and built up my confidence for applying for jobs. The support given to me by our Employability Tutor, Jason John, was invaluable and helped me apply for my current role.

After completing my Skills Bootcamp, I was provided with employability support from Jason and the delivery team for six months, which I found very useful. I was signposted towards the vacancy within the Skills Bootcamps team and decided to apply. Now I get to work within the team and support other students, from before they even start the Bootcamp up until six months after completing, and help them towards getting jobs of their own.

“The biggest piece of advice I’d give anyone who’s thinking about applying for one of our upcoming courses is to be committed to learning.”

Thinking of changing careers?

I think the biggest success of these short courses has been improving the students' confidence in getting back into work or taking the leap to change careers. It can be a scary decision to make but the delivery team are with students every step of the way and make sure they feel supported. The lecturers made it clear that we could contact them anytime with questions and they provided us with one to one mentoring sessions that we could attend if we felt that we were struggling.

Taking part in the Skills Bootcamp in Digital Marketing greatly improved my confidence and the skills I needed to apply for jobs in my desired field. The biggest piece of advice I’d give anyone who’s thinking about applying for one of our upcoming courses is to be committed to learning.

You’ll only get out of the course what you put in, so it’s crucial to complete the assignments the tutors set to the best of your ability and make sure you’re doing the independent study outside of lesson times. Listen to the advice and feedback that you receive from your tutors, talk to the other students on your course and collaborate with them where you can.

“Everyone comes from such different backgrounds and you’re guaranteed to learn something new from each person on the short course.”
