Exhibition celebrates the winners of the 2024 Porthleven Prize

Monday, 5 August, 2024

Members of the public will be able to explore work from Bath Spa University’s 2024 Porthleven Prize winners in an exhibition opening on 11 August.

The exhibition, called Tides That Bind, will feature work by seven BSU students and graduates studying a range of courses from Creative Writing to Photography, and will open at Netloft in Porthleven, Cornwall, before making its way to BSU’s Michael Pennie Gallery in October.

The Porthleven Prize, sponsored by The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust, is now in its eleventh year. The prize empowers BSU students from all year groups and disciplines to experiment and collaborate, working together to create a touring exhibition of creative work.

Fifteen finalists were selected to take part in a residency at the Old Lifeboat House in Porthleven, where they participated in creative workshops led by Kellie Hindmarch, Course Leader for BA Photography, Simone Hesselberg, Porthleven Prize Coordinator, and Hugh Sanders, Senior Lecturer in Art and Design.

Seven of the fifteen students were then selected as winners and given the opportunity to participate in a second residency, where they were joined by Claire Loder, Lecturer in Ceramics, and Charlie Tweed, Programme Leader for MA Fine Art, for an immersive two-day workshop.

Porthleven Prize Coordinator, Simone Hesselberg, said:

“This is my first year working on the Porthleven Prize, and I have already seen the profound impact it has had on participating students. The residencies really encourage risk-taking and cross-disciplinary collaboration, which positively influences the creative direction of students – not only on the Prize itself, but within their programmes of study.

“Further, the Prize has forged strong connections with the local area of Porthleven, inspiring students to engage with existing communities as well as form their own. I also want to thank The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust for their generous support.”

This year’s winners and exhibiting artists are:

The exhibition is at Netloft in Porthleven from 11-15 August, and at the Michael Pennie Gallery at BSU’s Locksbrook Campus from 25 October to 3 November.‌
