Team GB Skeleton and Bobsleigh visit Newton Park for special Media Day

Wednesday, 23 October, 2024

Last month, a selection of BSU’s media courses hosted the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton teams for a media day at Newton Park.

Utilising the high-quality equipment in the production studio, students assisted with shooting content to be used on the teams’ various social media channels. This unique experience allowed students to effectively plan and shoot professional content, work with a client, and develop their communication and networking skills. By working in small groups, the students captured multiple streams of content effectively, with portraits and headshots taken in one area and short challenge videos filmed in the other.

Involved in the day were budding students of our new BA Sports Media Production course, which offers the experience of hands-on learning, high spec facilities and expert knowledge. This day is just one example of the unique opportunities these students will experience over their time at BSU.

Lizzie Powell, Course Leader for Sports Media Production, commented on the experience:

“This is such a great opportunity for our students to work directly with elite athletes and get hands on experience. It helps build confidence and also starts to build that all important CV! Having the next generation of Olympians working alongside the next generation of sports media producers creates a really exciting energy.”

First year students and ambassadors for Sports Media Production, Madi and Charlie, reflected on the filming day, saying:

“Team GB Bobsleigh and Skeleton team were the most welcoming and lovely group of people to work with. The relaxed working place meant we could shadow the technicians and get hands on with the equipment.”

They continued:

“This day allowed us to experience media in a way that we hadn’t been able to before coming here. It has shown us how we can run the day ourselves next year for Team GB and equally has given us contacts in the sporting world to help grow our portfolios for our future in sports media.”

Speaking on their excitement towards the course, Madi and Charlie added:

“So far we are loving this course. We have already been given many different opportunities to learn and grow, such as shooting for Bath City Womens football, running media for different sports societies here on site and touring sports stadiums! Our lecturers and course staff are wonderful and happy to help, creating a positive atmosphere in our seminars. We are excited to see what we get up to this year!”
