Bath Spa students benefit from more than £118,000 in scholarships and bursaries

Thursday, 21 September, 2023

Thanks to the continued generosity of our alumni and other supporters, the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) helped 212 Bath Spa University students over the past 3 years with funding from various awards and bursaries. During this period the office gave out £118,453 to help students achieve their ambitions.

Talking about the positive effect of the awards, Hannah Whiting, Business Development Manager at Bath Spa, said:

“Although the past few years haven’t been a typical university experience given the global pandemic, students have still required support. Funding from DARO has meant that they’ve been able to exceed their own expectations. The funding has helped students to travel to new countries, create performances and purchase equipment, allowing them to grow in unimaginable ways.”

DARO offers several awards which allow students to take on projects and activities that they otherwise would not be able to do. The awards and bursaries available through DARO are there to ensure students can pursue projects which will enhance their academic and future careers, as well as to help those who are experiencing hardship to complete their studies.

The awards are funded by donations from Bath Spa alumni, as well as local philanthropists, friends and other supporters of the University.

Ellie (BA (Hons) Fashion Design) received funds from the Doris Southcott Bursary to support with the costs of her course:

“This funding has provided me with a great help to cover costs of fabrics, sewing and drawing equipment, printing and presentation costs and buying a professional portfolio, which I will use for many years to come and help me secure career opportunities now and in the future.”

Maisie (BA (Hons) Music) used funds from the Taunton Maids Bursary to gain some extra lessons for her musical practice:

“As a result of these extra lessons, I’ve been able to prepare solo and ensemble pieces for performances at the University in lunchtime concerts, and at other venues, like Bath Abbey and the Holburne Museum. Without these extra lessons, I’m not sure I would have been as well-prepared to perform under such pressures, but the lessons improved my confidence greatly."

Matilda (BA (Hons) Global Development and Sustainability) was awarded the High-Performance Sports Award to allow her to pursue her ambitions in the field of ice hockey, travelling to participate in tournaments:

“This scholarship will help me when I represent the Great Britain University team in New York, Lake Placid, where I will play in the Winter World Games.”

There are several awards available to students to help them during their studies, including:
