Student wins the 2021 ASET Student Competition

Tuesday, 17 May, 2022

We're delighted to announce that Briony Carter, a Biology Conservation student, has won the ASET Student Competition.

The competition run by ASET, the Work Based and Placement Learning Association, is open to students returning to their institutions having completed a placement, or work experience, during the previous academic year.

Briony submitted a 900-word reflection on the value of her placement experience at Ferne Animal Sanctuary and its impact on her future. She was selected as the overall winner of this year’s competition, for which she received £400 prize money.

Briony opted to undertake a professional placement year (PPY) during her degree to boost her employability, and to help her to stand out against other candidates in the field.

Briony said:

"I’m so pleased to have won this award in recognition of my work experience. In my opinion, placement years are necessary for any person who wants to work in a practical setting, where physical labour makes up most of the work. It helps people to understand whether their chosen career is right for them and allows them to steer themselves towards what works for them."

ASET was established to advance the prevalence, effectiveness and quality of work based and placement learning in Higher Education and by promoting and publishing research into that system of education. A full list of ASET Student Competition winners including runners up and those from previous years can be viewed on the ASET website.

Congratulations to Briony on this great accomplishment from all at Bath Spa University.
