Students dazzle the SU with dance routines for charity

Friday, 17 January, 2025

Last Friday, BSU’s Dance Club, the Titans, hosted their dazzling dance fundraiser, Spa Does Strictly, for the fourth year running. Taking place in the Students Union, BSU sports clubs signed up to the challenge of performing a dance routine in front of an audience and a judging panel. This year's theme for songs and costume was ‘Back to the 90s’. With alumni judges - Jess, Áine, Cecilia and Beth – and an alumni host, Dan, the evening connected the BSU community old and new through dance.

Each year, the Titans decide on a charity they would like to support, and this year the choice was Cancer Research UK, which holds a strong place in many member’s hearts. The proceeds made from the evening, including the raffle, entry tickets and donation buckets, came to a grand total of £517.95.

For the competition aspect of the evening, 6 sports clubs took on the challenge and graced the stage with fun and flare. With judges scores and an online voting system via Instagram, the competitive spirit was high.

Taking the third place title was Bath Spa’s Cheer society, the Rapids, who performed a high-flying ‘Magic Mike’ inspired routine to NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’. The dance was choreographed by one of the cheer club members and included many lifts and tricks.

Coming in second place for the second-year running was the Bath Spa Women’s Football Club. Choreographed by BSU Dance Club president, Holly Herrington, their performance included high vis jackets, caps and sunglasses to a remix of Backstreet Boy’s classics.

Winning the first-place trophy was Bath Spa’s Hockey Team, who did an upbeat routine involving chairs, lifts and crop tops, to ‘Spice Up Your Life’ by the Spice Girls! Choreographed by BSU Dance Club’s Renee Martinez. With a total score of 36/40 and the highest number of votes on social media, the Hockey team proudly accepted the win.

Other sports teams dazzling the SU with their dance routines were the Titans Social Team, American Football and Tennis. Each dance was welcomed with huge support, and many were praised highly from the alumni judges.

Emily Hickinbotham, Titans Vice President, commented on the event:

“We loved the opportunity to get so many different people together and teach them our passion, all for a good cause. It’s also so much fun to see everyone’s hard work paying off, stepping out of their comfort zones and absolutely smashing it on the stage!”

The night wrapped up with lots of photos, flowers and thanks to all involved. Congratulations to the BSU Dance Club, with special thanks to the President, Holly, Vice President, Emily, and Raising and Giving Officer, Pameet for organising the amazing event!
