BSU Professor among the top two percent of scientists in the world
Thursday, 19 December, 2024BSU’s own Professor of Environment and Culture, Sian Sullivan has been featured in this year’s Stanford University/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist Rankings list, recognising her as one of the world’s most influential scientists in her field.
Sian is an environmental anthropologist, cultural geographer and political ecologist with research encompassing areas of oral history and heritage of Indigenous people – particularly Damara/ǂNūkhoen and ǁUbun in western Namibia – amidst the consequences of colonialism, decolonisation, conservation and climate change. She is a key member of the University’s Research Centre for Environmental Humanities and teaches an undergraduate module on Conservation Politics in Africa.
Talking about her inclusion on the prestigious list, Sian said:
"Honestly, you could have knocked me over with a feather when I learned about this listing! It's a great honour, and I hope I'll be able to continue to support students in the domains of cultural landscapes, social sciences and humanities approaches to environmental conservation, and political ecology into the future."
Alison Hems, Head of the School of Writing, Publishing and the Humanities added:
“There are many ways in which we measure the impact of research, and Professor Sullivan's ranking in 'The Top 2% of Scientists' is one of those. We are delighted by this endorsement of her work, which we know to be far-ranging in its scope, value and significance.”
The Top 2% Scientist list is based on citations updated annually and uses metrics such as h-index, co-authorship adjustments, and a composite citation score (c-score), which reflects a researcher’s influence rather than just their publication count. Scientists are ranked based on Scopus data, with the top 100,000 or those in the top 2% of their field included.
