Printing exhibition celebrating the "printer's fist" on show in London

Monday, 7 November, 2022

A printing exhibition curated by Visiting Research Fellow Tim Jollands is currently on show in London.

The exhibition, A Show of Hands, celebrates the “manicule” or “printer’s fist” and features posters, books and ephemera from letterpress printers from across the UK, most of which have been produced especially for the exhibition. It was the brainchild of Tim, a trained letterpress printer who has been running the Michael Turner Albion Press Room at Bath Spa’s Corsham Court campus since 2017.

The exhibition was on display at Corsham Court in September and October 2019, before transferring to the University of York. A planned London showing in spring 2020 was delayed because of the pandemic. Thankfully the wait is now over, and the exhibition is on display at the offices of Maggs, the rare book and manuscript dealer.

Professor of English Literature Ian Gadd, who helped establish the Michael Turner Albion Press room at Corsham Court, said:

“I'm delighted that this wonderful exhibition can finally get its London showing. We’re very grateful to Maggs for providing an ideal venue for such an eclectic, lively, and high quality set of exhibits. Do go and visit if you can!"

Members of the public can view the exhibition from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday at Maggs, 48 Bedford Square, London, until 25 November.
