Students Sweep Awards at Royal Television Society West Ceremony
Friday, 22 March, 2024Bath Spa University students and alumni enjoyed a successful night at the Royal Television Society West student awards in Bristol.
The event, which was hosted at the Watershed in Bristol, celebrated the best that the region has to offer, with a number of Bath Spa University students and alumni being nominated.
Bath Spa University boasted nominees and winners from courses such as Film and Television, Production and Journalism.
Tyrese Shipp, Sophie Taylor and Harry Orr, all Bath Spa University alumni, took home the award for Short Factual Film for their documentary ‘Dragons’. The documentary follows Bristol’s Dragon Boat community and has received widespread praise.
Tyrese and Harry, alongside Alex Chiles, also received awards for their camera craft on the film, with Sophie Taylor also receiving two craft awards for producing and sound on the project.
In a post on Instagram, the team behind Dragons said:
“Thrilled we have won Best Short Form Factual at the RTS West of England Student Awards! Massive shoutout to every member of our crew for winning a craft award, in particular our unsung producer Sophie! Made even better that our Execs could be there too!”
Victory at regional level means that Tyrese, Sophie, Harry and Alex will all now go through to the national Royal Television Society Awards, which will be held in April this year.
The production crew of ‘In My Tux Shop’ - Jamie Salter, Iwan Morgan, Rowan Hales, Oscar Phillips, Joseph Buday and Harry Orr also celebrated being nominated in the Short Fiction film category, picking up craft awards for production design (Rowan) and writing (Iwan, for ‘Chippy’).
Bath Spa University has been a regular visitor to the Royal Television Society West Awards in recent years, offering students the chance to showcase their work, celebrate their achievements and network with leading industry professionals.
We’ll all be keeping our fingers crossed for more success at the national awards in April.
