Senior lecturer signs contract with Routledge

Friday, 11 October, 2024

Having joined BSU in 2022, Senior Dance lecturer Zhi Xu has recently announced the successful signing of his contract with Routledge, to publish his own monograph on dance.

Taking to LinkedIn to share the news he expressed;

“It is now official! I am thrilled to share that I have just signed a contract with Routledge to publish my first monograph on dance, intercultural identity and techno-choreography! I am over the moon!”

Beginning his career at a young age, Zhi started out in classical, folk and contemporary dance, before going onto obtain his BA in Choreography, MA in Dance Philosophy and History and also a PhD in Dance and Technology.

Now a choreographer, lecturer, and researcher he states, “dance has always been my primary mode of expression” having created more than 20 compositions worldwide including Being River (2024), X-Body (2019), Kun.Peng (2017) and Chasing The Dream (2014).

His exhibitions and projects have allowed him to tour the likes of Canada, Russia, Belgium and Malaysia to name a few. He even joined the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony as an independent director.

Specialising his dance work in conjunction with the study of technology, he hopes for his future release to shed light on how the cutting-edge field of evolving developments in VR, AR, motion capture and human-computer interaction can be so interlinked with theatre and movement.

The monograph promises to explore the intersection of dance, technology and intercultural identity, filling the literary gap in research linking the two together. It serves as an outlet for curiosity as Zhi recalled it has been the driving force of his career to date, from pursuing his PhD to engaging in teaching and research;

“Dancing, thinking and writing have always been a deep source of joy and passion for me. I see writing as another form of choreography—using words to ‘dance’ with ideas. I feel incredibly fortunate to work in higher education, which supports all my diverse interests and passions”.
