Graduate receives coveted Music Producers Guild Rising Star Award 2024
Monday, 8 July, 2024Bath Spa University Commercial Music graduate Amy Sergeant has won the Music Producers Guild (MPG) Rising Star Award 2024 for her breakthrough into the music scene and outstanding work producing, engineering and mixing.
A non-profit organisation that represents professional Record Producers, Recording Engineers, Mixers and Mastering Engineers from all backgrounds, the MPG hosts an annual event to recognise early talent on track to becoming industry trail blazers.
Amy graduated from Commercial Music at BSU in 2017 where she studied the integrated MA program. Since moving to London in 2021, Amy has been an active member of MPG and has spent the years since graduation working towards a long and sustainable career creating music.
Matt Taylor, MPG Executive Director shared his views on the winners. He said:
“Congratulations to all the winners. What a fantastic year. The MPG awards are now firmly one of the premier events on the calendar… and last night’s deserved winners reflect that. The MPG is all about growing and sustaining the talent pipeline and seeing winners either be presented or present awards to their mentors echoes the feeling of the wider community.”
Since graduating, Amy quickly progressed from assisting sessions for the likes of Florence and The Machine, Wolf Alice, and The Vamps to engineering across some of London's biggest studios, namely Miloco and Metropolis for producers such as Rodney Jerkins, Mark Crew & Hugo White. Her work at the Brit Awards has seen her invited back as an assistant mix engineer every year since leaving university.
Adding another string to her bow, Amy landed a role at smash digital streaming platform, Spotify as an in-house engineer. Responsible for running the Spotify studio sessions, Amy credits Spotify for developing her as an engineer, helping her to branch out on her own; setting up her own studio space and even building much of the acoustic treatment herself.
Amy’s award reflects her drive and ambition. Harnessing skills learned at university and developed in the working world, Amy is forging her way in a competitive industry and the prize places her among some of the most exciting up-and-coming music professionals. She said:
“The other nominees (Izzy McPhee & Jess Camilleri) I’d known of for a long time and they’re doing brilliant work, so to be nominated amongst them alone was extremely flattering let alone receiving the award.”
Amy went on to discuss her time at BSU and the support she received throughout her time at university:
“I loved my time at BSU. The out-of-city setting suited me and it was a comfortable, calm space to be creative. Throughout the course, there were a variety of modules with different skills to learn and at the same time there was flexibility to tie in some modules with the freelance career I was building. The lecturers on CM were great, from the first term of first year through to now Jim Dickinson and Chris Blanden who have been super supportive.”
