The 2024 Porthleven Prize exhibition makes its way from Cornwall to Bath

Tuesday, 22 October, 2024

An exhibition opening in Bath Spa University’s Michael Pennie Gallery on Thursday 24 October will celebrate the winners of the 2024 Porthleven Prize.

Tides That Bind is the culmination of the 11th annual Porthleven Prize. The 2024 prize winners were selected from all year groups and disciplines across the institution, and brought together over two artist residencies in Porthleven, Cornwall. The exhibition opened at Netloft in Porthleven in August before making its way to Locksbrook Campus.

The prize, sponsored by The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust, empowers BSU students from all year groups and disciplines to experiment and collaborate, working together to create a touring exhibition of creative work.

Porthleven Prize Coordinator, Simone Hesselberg, said:

“This year’s Porthleven Prize has had a huge impact on the students involved. By encouraging risk-taking and cross-disciplinary collaboration, the residency has positively changed the creative direction of students.”

Fifteen finalists were selected to take part in a residency at the Old Lifeboat House in Porthleven, where they participated in creative workshops led by Kellie Hindmarch, Course Leader for BA Photography, Simone Hesselberg, Porthleven Prize Coordinator, and Hugh Sanders, Senior Lecturer in Art and Design.

Seven of the fifteen students were then selected as winners and given the opportunity to participate in a second residency, where they were joined by Claire Loder, Lecturer in Ceramics, and Charlie Tweed, Programme Leader for MA Fine Art, for an immersive two-day workshop.

Talking further about the impact the prize has had, Simone said:

“The Prize has continued to forge strong connections with the local area of Porthleven, inspiring students to engage with existing communities as well as form their own. We would like to congratulate this year’s prize winners for immersing themselves in the programme, and for a tremendous exhibition.

“The Prize wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust.”

This year’s winners and exhibiting artists are:

The exhibition is open to the public in the Michael Pennie Gallery at BSU’s Locksbrook Campus from 25 October to 3 November.‌
