BSU renews partnership with Music Workshop

Tuesday, 8 October, 2024

Bath Spa University has renewed its partnership with Music Workshop – a cultural partnership that gives students an insight into the professional landscape of music performance. The Workshop joins 16 other organisations across the creative and cultural sector in Bath that the University is partnered with.

Founded by BSU Commercial Music alum Kim Hoefkens-Lee in 2009, Music Workshop began with an ambition to create a safe creative space for passionate musicians. Initially, the hub solely delivered drum lessons, but through perseverance and passion, it began to host outstanding student performances.

As a BSU alum, Kim was keen to open a pathway for university students to explore the opportunities further education offers and formed a partnership with Bath Spa University. Mutually beneficial, the partnership has enabled the Workshop to flourish and provides students with a fully equipped professional space to host live events.

Providing both learning and performing opportunities for students and local musicians, Music Workshop can be found in the heart of the city. Nestled in Green Park Station, the studios boast over 250 students and a team of teachers. Workshop students can choose from eight musical pathways and an array of live and digital performance opportunities.

Inspiring a younger generation, BSU students have worked alongside young students, carving a path to further education and a career in the music industry.

Karen Teague, BSU’s Organisational Partnerships and Alumni Manager said:

“We are delighted to continue our cultural partnership with Music Workshop, particularly as it was founded by BSU alumn Kim Hoefkens-Lee.

“Alongside offering an additional professional setting for our students, Music Workshop plays an important role in Bath’s creative community with events, workshops and a creative space for young people to explore their musical talent and develop their ambitions to study and ultimately work in the music industry.”

The Workshop has also recently expanded to incorporate a brand-new community space called Muw Shed. The space has been designed for creation, live performance, choir groups, book readings, recording and personal study and is kitted out with purpose-built music rooms and a coffeehouse event space.

Kim Hoefkens-Lee, Founder of Music Workshop and BSU alum said:

"Knowing that you have the support of a well-respected large organisation has given us a platform to expand our organisation and most importantly create a pathway for our students. It has been invaluable, and our future plans continue to evolve with the encouragement of everyone we meet with at Bath Spa University."

Last Friday, Music Workshop hosted an evening for musicians, offering the unique opportunity to learn from Mike Johnston and Eddy Thrower, who have been dubbed two of the most dynamic drummers in the industry.

The event, An Audience with Mike and Eddy, explored what it takes to make it, whether you're on stage or hustling to build your own path in the industry.

Kim Hoefkens-Lee said:

"We have two incredible drummers, both of whom have international recognition and are well-known within our industry, visiting us to host an evening event aimed at all musicians and offer insight, inspiration and a good dose of feel-good motivation for the year ahead.”

The event took place at BSU’s Locksbrook Campus and was run by the Workshop’s charity to bring internationally recognised artists to Bath.
