Producing success: BSU graduate makes his Theatre Royal debut

Tuesday, 20 August, 2024

MA Creative Producing graduate Matthew Emeny will add another feather to his very creative cap, making his debut at Theatre Royal Bath in September with a new project.

Matthew is the associate producer on Joshua Beamount and Original Theatre's production of ART by Yasmina Reza, opening at the Theatre Royal Bath on 3 September.

The smash hit comedy tells the story of how a seemingly simple purchase of contemporary art – an all-white painting – ignites a hilarious debate among three close friends. What begins as a light-hearted discussion about art quickly descends into an exploration of the blurred lines between art and reality.

Talking about his excitement, Matthew said:

“This is my 12th year as a creative in the city of Bath and I am delighted to be part of the team working on this incredible production of ART. As this is my debut production at Theatre Royal Bath it is an incredible moment in my career. I can't thank the producers Josh Beaumont and Original Theatre enough for this opportunity.”

As the associate producer, Matthew’s role is to support the production in whatever way is needed, from organising crew travel and transport of props to booking accommodation, printing scripts or acting as a sounding board to bounce off ideas.

Explaining his role further, Matthew said:

“The elements of a play are vast, and I am there to help [Lead Producer] Josh in any way I can. As this is my first time working on a production of this scale, Josh has been fantastic in showing me the ropes of producing at a large commercial level. It’s been a huge learning curve for me and a fantastic experience that I am extremely grateful to be a part of.”

Matthew is no stranger to the arts community in Bath. In addition to being a creative mentor at EMERGE – BSU’s studio residency programme for graduates – he is Associate Producer at The Production Garden and Artistic Director of Calf 2 Cow and the Garden Theatre Festival

Matthew said:

“Josh and I have been producing together for four years now, building the Garden Theatre Festival and Calf 2 Cow tours. We also run a Christmas immersive experience and tribute bands. We have a huge year coming up and I can't wait to get going!”

ART is at Theatre Royal Bath from 3-7 September. You can find out more and book tickets on the Theatre Royal website
