BSU Graduate co-founds revolutionary Student app

Monday, 30 September, 2024

Converting ideas into a real world product is a dream for many, but often you need multiple minds and plenty of dedication to make that dream a reality. That’s exactly what BSU Creative Computing graduate Toby Krystman achieved alongside fellow LookFour co-founders Max Royle and Charlie Miall.

LookFour is a newly-launched app that tailors events to its user, using filters to create a unique experience and crafting the ultimate night out. Whether you’re relaxing with friends or looking for a local event, the LookFour app enables you to pick your perfect venue and discover it within an instant.

Upon signing up, the app asks you to define your preferences in four key areas: favourite drinks, music, facilities and any accessibility features that you require. From there, you’ll have a tailored selection of daily highlights that will show you four different venues, each with a deal, event, drink selection and highlight that is specifically picked out for you.

In the case of bringing the dream to life, it was Creative Computing graduate Toby who stepped forward to actualise the LookFour concept:

“Me and Max spoke about the project for a couple of hours and I was immediately invested. I had created apps as part of group projects at university and the lessons learned from the course allowed me to get stuck into this straight away.

With this new project, I’ve been able to learn more and more, utilising my coding skills developed at uni. I started on the gaming pathway and switched to web and learned loads from both sections, which has given me a lot of transferable skills directly from the course to put straight through to this project itself.”

The app has just been released in beta form and is currently localised to Bristol, giving BSU students the chance to explore their surroundings outside of Bath.

Speaking about the reason behind launching the app, Max, a UWE graduate, reflected on the importance of discovering your local area when moving to a new home:

“When I first moved to Bristol, I didn't know where to go and it would take so much time to pick different venues and I would ultimately end up wasting time in places I didn’t enjoy.

I think that our big selling point is, if you're new to Bath and you find yourself going out into Bristol, this app will save you loads of time and increase the amount of fun that you're going to have.”

The ambition is clear for the LookFour team: establish themselves and seek to expand, with Toby dreaming of expansion into Bath and cities beyond. He said:

“It's nice to experience Bristol because it's so close to Bath and if people like the app and our launch is successful, we can always look to expand to Bath."

The LookFour project has also had an extra helping hand from BSU, with the concept winning the Launch It fund earlier this year as well. Offered to students and graduates like Toby, the Launch It fund enables those eligible to access up to £2,000 to launch their projects, with further funding opportunities available.

Speaking about winning the Launch It fund, Max said:

“We were really fortunate to win the Launch It fund and it came at a time where we had limited resources left. Since then, we’ve been able to secure different fundings and investments and we’re really excited to launch now.”

Whilst the LookFour app seeks to set you up for the perfect night out, it’s ultimately a tool that offers discovery, fuels curiosity and allows you to explore different parts of your local area that you may never have known about before.

As Toby puts it:

“We sell fun.”
