BSU hosts kick-off event for brand-new initiative, Her Game, Her Story

Tuesday, 2 July, 2024

In 2024, Bath Spa University was named University of the Year for Social Inclusion by The Sunday Times, now the University is taking that title one step further.

BSU has teamed up with Jadavpur University in India and Delhi-based sports broadcasting company SportzWorkz to change the future of women’s sports coverage with a new initiative, Her Game, Her Story.

The project will focus on coverage in India but once firmly established aims to move further afield, applying the same model in other countries.

Her Game Her Story is led by Subject Leader in Film and TV at BSU, Dr Suman Ghosh and Programme Leader, Sports Media Production, Lizzie Powell. The initiative is funded by the British Council’s Going Global Industry-Academia partnership scheme.

The project kicked off earlier this month with an event held on home soil, bringing industry experts from the world of women's sports to the UK to share insights with their team in India during a studio discussion show.

Utilising BSU’s state-of-the-art facilities, the panellists were joined by the University’s tech team and Sports Media Production students who helped to film and produce the show with team member and Project Associate, Mahe Henadeerage, undertaking much of the organisation.

Hosted by presenter Ali Vowles, the panel included BSU’s Lizzie Powell and Dr Suman Ghosh alongside thought leaders, media professionals, and sports enthusiasts, who discussed the future of women’s sports coverage and collaborations to bridge gender gaps.

Lizzie Powell discussed her experience driving the Her Game Her Story project:

“Running Her Game Her Story has been such an adventure, and the event was an absolute highlight. We brought together leading voices from the world of women's sports in the UK to share insights with our team in India and made the most of all we have at BSU by teaming up with our brilliant tech team and students to produce two studio discussion shows.”

Globally male-dominated, sports media is known for giving more visibility to sports traditionally practised by men and reporting on male athletes and their performance over women’s.

With two-thirds of UK adults agreeing that how women are represented in the media can support gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes and seven in ten agreeing how women see other women represented can affect their self-image, Her Game Her Story hopes to play a transformative role in crafting a more supportive and enriching media landscape.

The team hopes to score a home run for women’s sports coverage by increasing the representation of female athletes, diversifying sporting events and producing a platform to equip journalists and reporters commenting on women’s sports. The platform will provide a wealth of resources to help elevate female profiles in the sporting world and include information on events, athletes, rules, and compelling female-led stories.
