A BSU graduate’s journey into the professional world

Wednesday, 4 September, 2024

In 2022, Chantelle Wareham graduated from BSU with a BSc in Geography. Since then, she’s returned to the University to share her journey into the professional world and advise current students on how to overcome barriers in the workplace.

Since leaving university, Chantelle has landed her dream job – becoming a key member of the business development team at the reusable water bottle company, Chilly's. Securing the role a day before graduation, Chantelle credits her time at university for fostering her passion for reducing plastic consumption.

But Chantelle’s career ventures haven’t stopped there. After taking a successful freelancing module, she decided to set up a side hustle as a bridal makeup artist. She said:

“It’s very different to my Monday-Friday with Chilly’s, but it tickles my creative side. I’m currently working on a re-brand and updating my website, putting so many of the skills learned during my degree to good use.”

Taking full advantage of the opportunities offered to her at university, Chantelle described exploring a range of modules:

“I absolutely loved the variety of modules available during my time at BSU, I opted for a vast range, including sustainability, successful freelancing, geomorphology and geotechnologies.

“They allowed me to explore different topics and consider wider options. The Careers Team was so helpful during my final year, answering questions, inspiring career pathways, and providing support for next steps.”

BSU offers a wealth of academic support and has a dedicated team to assist students in taking the next step in their careers. Chantelle encouraged current students to make the most of the resources available:

“It’s important to take advantage of the support and knowledge around you. Book an appointment with your lecturers, attend a drop-in Careers session, and speak to the Wellbeing team. All the resources are there to help you with the first steps in your career. If you’re nervous about attending, ask a friend to come along!”

Returning to BSU as part of the launch of the Grad Support Unit and Careers event, Chantelle shared advice to graduating students. She said:

“Grasp opportunities with both hands. You never know where that path will take you. Be kind to everyone you meet. Not only because you never know what connections they have but also because you never know what kind of day someone is having.

“Going into the world of work can be daunting, but you’ll experience things you didn’t think were possible. Believe in yourself! The best years are yet to come.”
