Sunday, 5 December, 2021

Students at Bath Spa University will be bringing history to life this December, with the immersive theatrical performance, Christmas at Newton Park.

During the atmospheric theatrical tour audiences will be led through the grand rooms and hallways of Main House on Bath Spa’s Newton Park campus. They will encounter characters from across three centuries of the building’s turbulent history, and witness their compelling stories unfolding.

All the action is reflective of the history of the house, which since being built in 1762, has been a family home, a base for the suffragist Lady Anna Gore-Langton, a World War One field hospital, and a teacher training college, before becoming Bath Spa’s Newton Park campus in the 20th century.

Christmas at Newton Park is a real opportunity for Bath Spa University students across a range of courses to showcase their talents. The show is being staged by Bath Spa Productions and includes with BA Acting, and BA Theatre Festival and Event Production students, with an assistant director currently on the MA Directing course, music composed by 3rd year BA Music students, and a group of BA Film and TV students will be filming the production.

Subject Leader for Acting and Production at Bath Spa University, and Producer of Bath Spa Productions, Kerry Irvine said: “Christmas at Newton Park is a special project not only because it gives a wonderful opportunity for our creative students to collaborate together, but because it connects them to Main House and Newton Park Campus in a new way.
“This immersive project takes our students and public audiences on a journey through the history and life of the House and the surrounding environment, and it allows us to see Newton Park, and especially our beautiful house and landscape, with a new perspective.”

Christmas at Newton Park will run 9-11 December, with two performances on Friday, three performances on Saturday and one performance on Sunday. All performances are now sold out.

The show was last performed at Newton Park Campus in 2016 with extra dates added due to its success.
