The power of support: BSU gifts new generator to Ukrainian partner university
Thursday, 16 January, 2025Bath Spa University is supporting one of its partner institutions in Ukraine by donating a generator which will enable students to continue to learn during blackouts and power outages in the country.
The International University of Economics and Humanities (IUEH) in Rivne, Ukraine, has received a generator from BSU as part of an international twinning programme and the #GeneratorsForUkraine initiative.
The Cormack Consultancy Group’s #GeneratorsForUkraine project brings together educational institutions from around the world to help Ukrainian partners meet basic needs in times of crisis. Bath Spa University was twinned with IUEH in 2022 as part of Universities UK International's Twin for Hope initiative to help the Ukrainian university continue to survive – and thrive – focused primarily on support and collaboration around teaching and research.
A delegation from IUEH visited BSU in June 2024 and highlighted the need for local generators to ensure that the university’s systems can be kept running during power cuts. BSU worked with IUEH to identify the specifications of the generator they needed and provided the necessary funding for them to purchase one locally in Ukraine. The generator will help to provide power for IUEH’s offices and administrative needs.
Professor Vitalii Demianchuk, Rector of IUEH, noted that the generator will guarantee the uninterrupted operation of the university and will help to continue the educational process even in the face of power outages.
Colleagues from IUEH expressed their gratitude to BSU in a video released on YouTube.
In the video, Professor Demianchuk said:
“We are very grateful [to Bath Spa University] for this wonderful gift. Now, in the conditions of war, we often have blackouts, and this generator enables us to continue our educational processes and work, even during power outages. On behalf of the entire [IUEH] team, the administration, teaching staff and students, we thank the entire team at Bath Spa University for this opportunity.”
Professor Ian Gadd, Head of Development for European Projects, said:
"Bath Spa University's support and solidarity for our friends in Ukraine remains steadfast. By supplying this generator, we have been able to help IUEH maintain critical services despite the regular power cuts caused by Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure so that staff and students there will be able to continue to study, work, and research."
