Bath Spa launches student-designed eco-friendly cups

Monday, 18 September, 2023

Bath Spa University is showcasing its status as a Hedgehog Friendly Campus – as well as the talent of its students – with the launch of a new reusable cup.

Last year Bath Spa held a hedgehog-themed design competition to promote its hedgehog friendly status. BA Graphic Design student Ella Smith created the winning design, which appears on eco-friendly reusable Huskups, and is now available to buy at catering venues across campuses.

Emma Jakins, Sustainability Coordinator at Bath Spa, said:

"These cups tick all the boxes! Not only are they made from an agricultural byproduct that would otherwise go to waste (rice husks) they also support hedgehog conservation in the UK. Ella's design is incredibly popular with everyone who sees it!”

Huskups are reusable cups made using rice husks which were discarded as a waste product from the rice industry. The cups are biodegradable and contain zero plastic (excluding the lid and band). The cups are a key step in helping the University achieve its aim to eradicate single use plastic on campus.

Each sale includes a 20p donation to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to help conserve Hedgehogs in Britain.
