BSU backs the Bath Safe Bus
Friday, 4 October, 2024Bath Spa University is proud to sponsor the Bath Safe Bus, an initiative designed to offer immediate assistance to anyone requiring a safe space while visiting Bath’s pubs, clubs and nightlife on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Bath Safe Bus is a multi-award-winning project run by the Bath Business Improvement District (BID).
Positioned in Orange Grove, near the iconic Bath Abbey, the Bath Safe Bus is in the heart of the city from 10.30pm to 4.00am.
As well as offering medical care and emotional support, the Bath Safe Bus also offers the following services and amenities:
- Tea and Coffee Facilities
- Phone Charging
- Spare Clothing
- Sexual Health Products
- Female Hygiene products
- Flip Flops
- Food
- Support Leaflets
Since the Bath Safe Bus launched in March 2023, it has supported 438 people, dealt with 245 welfare incidents, treated 193 medical incidents and prevented 187 calls to the Emergency Services.
Professor Becky Schaaf, Pro-Vice-Chancellor: Student Experience at Bath Spa University said:
"The Bath Safe Bus is an important initiative that provides a vital service for the Bath community late at night, many of which are students. It's incredibly valuable to have medical and security professionals available in a central location to help those in need on a night out. We are delighted to support the project to ensure there is a safe space in the City Centre on weekends and at key points of the academic year."
Nick Bishop, who manages the Bath BID Business Crime Reduction Partnership, spoke about the importance of the partnership with BSU:
“Keeping people safe in the city at night is the responsibility of everyone who lives, studies or works in the city centre. Without the support of the whole community, the Council, the residents and in this case Bath Spa University, the Safe Bus would not be viable and would not be able to deliver the excellent quality service provided by the fully qualified paramedic on board”
The Bath Safe Bus is a valued element of safety in Bath’s nighttime economy and supports businesses who operate at that time.
Reflecting on the importance of this initiative, Nick added:
“For most students, the Safe Bus will hopefully never be needed, but on those rare occasions where they or a friend find themselves in difficulty, in a position of vulnerability or overwhelmed by an unexpected and unpleasant circumstance, the Bus and our team of night marshals are there to provide help and assistance. We hope that all students will come and find out about the bus, and make sure that all their friends know as well so that the service can be used to everyone’s full advantage.”
