New painting prize will recognise Bath Spa talent

Monday, 10 February, 2020

The upcoming Grand Opening of our Locksbrook Campus will also usher in the launch of a new prize for Bath Spa students specialising in painting.

The Peter Kinley Prize for Painting will launch on 3 March during the Private View of our Alumni exhibition at Sion Hill gallery. The prize will be awarded to a graduating student (final year Undergraduate or final year Postgraduate), who will receive £1000.

Peter Kinley was a lecturer in painting at Bath Academy of Art (later the Bath School of Art and Design) from 1971-1988. Kinley’s estate has initially committed to funding the prize for five years.

In addition to the £1000 cash prize, the winner will be offered an exhibition at either the Locksbrook gallery or the Sion Hill gallery, and £200 towards materials purchased at the Art Shop at Locksbrook Campus.

Dr Dan Allen, Head of the School of Art, said, “Establishing the Peter Kinley prize is great for our students; it will further support our prize-winning graduates as they establish successful careers as fine art practitioners. Having such a prize is also great for the University as it further establishes Bath School of Art as a centre for excellence in painting.”

All painting graduates will be eligible for the prize. Selection will involve two external judges and the winner will be announced at the annual Degree Shows.
