Journeys with "The Waste Land" Exhibition
Friday, 12 January, 2018An exhibition proposed and developed by Bath Spa's Professor Mike Tooby opens at Turner Contemporary in Margate next month.
Journeys with "The Waste Land" is an exhibition exploring resonances between the visual arts and T.S. Eliot’s complex and influential poem "The Waste Land", part of which Eliot wrote in Margate before its publication in 1922.
Mike, in conjunction with local research curator Trish Scott, has been working on the exhibition and its unique curatorial approach for Turner Contemporary Margate since 2013.
Debating the poem's contemporary relevance through the visual arts, the exhibition includes works by over 60 artists ranging from the nineteenth centuries through to present day. Artists represented include J.M.W. Turner, Man Ray, Edward Hopper, Philip Guston and Cy Twombly, with contemporary works by Tacita Dean, Jo Stockham, and Christane Baumgartner.
New works made specifically for the exhibition will also be displayed, with contributions from such artists as Henrik Hakansson, John Newling, Rosalie Schweiker and Emma Talbot.
The exhibition runs from the 3 February to 7 May, 2018, with a revised version to be shown at The Herbert Coventry from 15 September - 18 November.
