Hats off to Children’s University graduates
Tuesday, 17 July, 2018More than 60 local primary school children recently took part in their very first graduation ceremony at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus as part of a joint initiative with the Children’s University.
National charity, Children’s University, works with Bath Spa University to encourage local children in Bath and North East Somerset to learn new skills and take part in enriching experiences outside of the classroom.
Now in its second year, the collaboration between Bath Spa University and Weston All Saints Primary School (WASPS) saw pupils in Years 4-6 receive certificates in recognition of what they have achieved through the partnership over the last 18 months. Activities have included taking part in Bath Spa University-led projects such as a Paper Nations writing scheme and an interactive quest for fun and facts held at the Roman Baths.
This year, almost double the amount of children pulled on their gowns and caps to graduate, compared to the previous year. Visitors including parents, carers and teachers joined the children to witness the proud moment and Professor Kate Reynolds, Executive Dean of Bath Spa University’s Institute for Education, began the afternoon’s celebrations with an inspiring welcome speech.
Professor Kate Reynolds said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the children and all WASPS visitors to Bath Spa University for our 2018 Children’s University Graduation Ceremony. Some of our young graduates managed to gain both Bronze and Silver Awards in one year which really is testament to their love of learning, and demonstrates what can be achieved through fun and engaging activities outside the classroom. We look forward to welcoming many more young graduates to Bath Spa University as our Children’s University partnership grows along with their imagination.”
Executive Headteacher at WASPS, Dr Anne Bull OBE, also shared the children’s accomplishments with the audience during the ceremony and Professor Stephen Ward, previous Dean of Education at Bath Spa University who has a long-standing association with the School, presented the children with their certificates.
The Children’s University is organised on a regional and local authority basis, and Bath Spa University acts as the local management organisation for the Bath and North East Somerset area. The University is also developing activities with the Wiltshire, Swindon and North Somerset projects.
