Bath Spa alumna brings home gold

Tuesday, 17 April, 2018

Congratulations to Bath Spa alumna Serena Guthrie, who won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with England’s netball team.

Serena, who graduated in 2011 with a BSc in Geography, and her teammates made history in the nail-biting 52-51 win over Australia, becoming the first England team ever to win gold in netball at the Commonwealth Games.

Having seen off Jamaica in a similarly tense semi-final, the Roses went into the final with the odds stacked against them. Australia – ranked number one in the world – were buoyed by the enthusiastic home support, in what was the first time in the sport's 20-year history at the Games, that the gold medal hadn’t been contested by Australia and New Zealand.

Australia had a four-point lead going into the final quarter, but England fought-back, pulling the scores level to 51-51. Helen Housby scored the winning goal in the last second of the game to give England a golden victory.

Congratulations to Serena and all her teammates.
