Bath Spa Graduate’s dream of becoming a published novelist comes true

Friday, 15 September, 2017

A former Bath Spa University student has finally achieved her dream of becoming a published novelist.

Kirsty Applebaum, who graduated from the University in February 2017 with an MA in Writing for Young People, has secured a two book publishing deal with children's publisher Nosy Crow.

Her debut novel, The Middler, which was awarded the 2016 United Agents Prize for Most Promising Writing for Young People, will be published next year. The novel was written for children aged 9 to 12.

Set in the near future, The Middler tells the story of a young girl named Maggie and explores forbidden friendship, loyalty and betrayal.

Kirsty Stansfield, Head of Fiction at Nosy Crow, bought the world rights to the novel from Nancy Miles at the Miles Stott Children's Literary Agency.

Kate Wilson, Managing Director of Nosy Crow, found herself drawn into The Middler from the very first page. She said the novel had a 'great voice' and 'real international potential'.

Kirsty Applebaum from Winchester, said: "The whole team has embraced the world of the book and they all love the characters of Maggie, Jed and Trig as much as I do. I'm very excited to be working with such a friendly, energetic and innovative publisher."

Congratulations Kirsty!
