Attachment Aware Schools – theoretical and policy perspectives

Wednesday 18 September, 2024 – Wednesday 18 September, 2024
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Online

Part of the School of Education Research Seminar Series 2024-25.

About the seminar

Dr Richard Parker will share some thoughts around the theoretical and policy context of the attachment aware schools project originating at BSU, taken from his book Attachment Aware Schools – a Critical Perspective, published by Palgrave Macmillan in July.

Richard argues that seeing attachment aware schools simply in terms of ‘progressive’ or ‘traditionalist’ models of education fails to take into account the wider tensions and inequalities in neoliberal society.

He discusses a range of critiques from right and left, and suggests that, in 2024, a much broader understanding of attachment, trauma and other relational approaches is necessary.

The seminar is chaired by Dr Kate Brooks.

About the speakers

Dr Richard Parker (BSU Visiting Research Fellow) will share some thoughts around the theoretical and policy context of the attachment aware schools project originating at Bath Spa, taken from his book Attachment Aware Schools – a Critical Perspective, published by Palgrave Macmillan in July.

A further seminar, hopefully under the aegis of the Attachment Research Community, later this year, will consider teacher views and perspectives from his empirical research.

Dr Kate Brooks has worked closely with Richard on a number of research developments at Bath Spa and is a fellow trustee of the Attachment Research Community. She is the Award Leader for the MA Professional Practice.
