A Show of Hands

Monday 30 September, 2019 – Saturday 19 October, 2019

Corsham Court campus, Basement Gallery, Corsham SN13 0BZ

A Show of Hands' celebrates one of printing's most famous visual icons: the printer's fist or ‘manicule’. The exhibition, curated by Tim Jollands, Visiting Research Fellow, features almost 90 posters, books and related ephemera from letterpress printers from across the UK, most of which have been produced especially for this exhibition.

Many well-known fine-press printers have submitted a piece as well as keen amateur printers. Each item offers a unique interpretation of the printer's fist – humorous, colourful, playful, serious, thoughtful, or surprising.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the following times:

  • From 5 to 13 October as part of Corsham’s Peacock Arts Trail
  • Weekends: 5th–6th and 12th–13th, 10am to 5pm
  • Midweek: 7, 9, and 11th, 12pm to 3.30pm, when the adjoining Michael Turner Albion Press Room will also be open to visitors
  • It will also feature as part of Corsham’s StoryTown on Friday 18 to Saturday 19 October, 10am to 4pm.

Other times will be by arrangement with Tim Jollands (t.jollands@bathspa.ac.uk); Bath Spa staff and students can visit during working hours without prior notice.

For those unable to make it to Bath, the exhibition will be transferring to University of York, courtesy of Thin Ice Press, during December and January (dates yet to be confirmed).
