What are Huskups?

Huskups are reusable cups made using rice husks which were discarded as a waste product from the rice industry. The cups are biodegradable and contain zero plastic (excluding the lid and band). They are a key step in helping the University achieve our aim to stop our use of single use plastic.

We're a Hedgehog Friendly Campus

While hedgehogs are adorable and unique, their numbers in the UK are falling at a startling rate. They face a host of threats in our modern world and are desperately in need of safe spaces in which to roam. We're currently a Silver Award level Hedgehog Friendly Campus, which means we're working hard to ensure our campus is a good home for hedgehogs.

We're now aiming for the Gold Award, and this design contest and the donations from sales of the winning cup will form part of our application.

About the contest

Design tips from Huskup

Patterns and colours

  • Some of the best designs work with the natural medium and use the rice husk colouring as a backdrop, rather than completely covering it up. The medium acts like a visual eco-trigger to tell people that something good is going on here – it's not plastic!
  • Wallpaper/patterns work well, as do images that run around the lower half of the cup – remember that when in use, the cups will have a 25mm wide heat band covering part of the cup.
  • For the best appearance, avoid very fine tints and photographic imagery.
  • Try to avoid joining detailed artwork across the vertical edge overlapping area.

Text

  • The slight curve of the cup means you'll need to warp any text if you want it to appear straight. An arc warp of around 4 or 5% will work for this.
  • All type should be outlined.

Formats

  • Preferred formats: Adobe Illustrator .ai vector file/PDF. We can also work with JPEG, TIFF  and Photoshopped files saved to CMYK. 300dpi.
  • We don't print Pantone – please match any Pantone colours to the nearest CMYK colour reference.
  • We don't print shiny, metallic, neon or fluorescent colours.
