What is an MBA?
An MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) is a postgraduate degree that’s designed to accelerate your business career. You’ll usually, but not always, have several years of business experience in any industry, with a keen interest in management roles and senior leadership. This qualification can help boost your salary and career prospects.
At Bath Spa University, we offer the following MBAs:
- MBA (London): Our London MBA covers many aspects of business, including change management, marketing, data analysis, and financial decision making. It's designed for those who aspire to manage others effectively and ethically.
- MBA Leadership (Bath): This course offers executive leadership education for those with existing management experience. It's designed for applicants with ambitions to enter senior leadership, strategic, and C-suite roles.
What you'll learn
This MBA programme supports your professional development as a manager through the academic study of business, class discussion and networking, and work-based learning. You'll meet like-minded professionals and learn to reflect on and evaluate your own practice and progress.
We challenge you to further develop management expertise that's relevant to your chosen career path and build lifelong learning skills that will be crucial to your ongoing professional development.
The course is designed to draw on your previous experiences while giving you opportunities to put your newly acquired knowledge into practice to address real-life work scenarios. We also emphasise collaborating with others as a way to enhance your understanding of both business theory and practice.
Authentic assessments will see you pitching, researching, managing projects and solving real business challenges. Through these, you'll develop skills that employers look for, and that are transferable in any industry.
The MBA is delivered either full-time over one year, or part-time over two academic years.
You'll take 120 credits of classroom-based taught modules before completing your 60-credit Capstone Project. This will either be:
- a research-based dissertation; or
- a consultancy project.
As part of the project, you'll investigate a real-world issue which links what you've learned on the course with your existing work experience and your interests.
We'll guide your choice of project to ensure that it connects meaningfully with your course and / or your employer's needs.
Consultancy option
Collaborate with an employer to investigate an issue, respond to it, and report back. You'll select an organisation to work with, who'll direct you to an issue they're currently facing. You'll then narrow your focus to the area of consultancy you wish to approach, and devise recommendations that the organisation may wish to implement.
Dissertation option
A dissertation is a research-based report which draws on various primary and secondary sources – the more ambitious, the better. With our support, you’ll develop several initial ideas and narrow these down. You'll develop a proposal, and once it's approved, you'll begin work. As part of the project, you’ll get to grips with the ethical approval process.
This course includes or offers the following modules. Please check the programme document for more information on which modules are core, required or optional.
- Corporate Communications
- Managing People and Contexts

The ELU (English Language Unit) team offers support in improving English language skills. The ASk team (Academic Skills) can help with writing essays, citing sources, Maths and statistics.
