We are pleased to be working with a number of School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) providers to deliver a Postgraduate Certificate of Education as part of their training.
Networks of schools that have been approved to run school-centred courses are known as SCITTs (School Centered Initial Teacher Training providers). SCITTs provide practical, hands-on teacher training, delivered by experienced, practising teachers based in their own school or a school in their network. Bath Spa University works with a number of SCITTs to deliver the academic award of the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) as part of their initial teacher training.
Bath Spa University's contribution includes the formal validation mechanism and academic support for the PGCE qualification for SCITT trainees. The Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) qualification is delivered by SCITT personnel through practical work and taught sessions in the SCITT schools and the SCITT centre. The SCITT recommend trainees for QTS to the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).
"You’ll have an extended support network of experienced teachers and mentors on hand to help you throughout your course. The school you’re with won’t ask you to teach classes unsupported until they think you’re ready."DfE, Get into Teaching
There is no pre-specified curriculum for the PGCE programme so detailed content is negotiated with each SCITT within the requirements of the University. Our programmes provide generic support for the Level 7 assignments and quality assurance around the theoretical pedagogical subject knowledge relating to the assignments/PGCE qualification.
