From catwalks and exhibitions to symposiums and seminars; culture weaves its way into almost everything we do. Our students consider culture – and immerse themselves in it – throughout their studies, in the UK and beyond.

Cullum Music Award winner

Silas Blackburn is an undergraduate student studying Commercial Music. After being awarded the Cullum Music Award, he travelled to New York in 2015 to intern at Nylon Studios for two months. Since then Silas has pushed his freelance career further, working with several artists and building his own small music production set up.

International travels

Sarah Middlemiss, an English Literature and History student, is making the most of the international opportunities we offer. She is working towards her Global Citizenship Award, has completed a summer school in China, an Erasmus+ in Denmark, and a summer school in Russia.

Sarah commented: “I was experiencing so many new things and meeting a really diverse range of people, which meant that I learnt about different cultures, and became more tolerable and appreciative.”

Porthleven Prize winner

Emily Furnell was one of five Porthleven Prize winners in 2014. The prize gives our students the rare opportunity to work collaboratively across creative disciplines (art, performance, music, writing, film making) to produce work for a major touring exhibition. Winners go on a fully funded residency to Porthleven in Cornwall.

Emily said: “Above all, my experience was both insightful and influential, sweetened only by the richness of cultural memory I delivered home, and that sense that I may have become even a small part of Porthleven.”
